Counseling for Black women · Atlanta

A room where you do not have to explain yourself

Loam is a one-counselor practice in Southwest Atlanta. Mariah Lockett sees Black women in person on Cascade Road, or by video if you are in Georgia, at a pace you set.

Services

What we work on together

  • Individual therapy

One to one, weekly or every other week, in person or by video. You bring what is on your mind. Mariah listens, asks questions and offers ways to look at it.

    Individual therapy
  • Work and caregiving

For the woman everyone leans on: at work, at home, at church, in the group chat. Sessions make room for what you give to others and what you keep for yourself.

    Work and caregiving
  • Grief and loss

For the loss of a person, a relationship, or a life you expected. There is no timeline here, and no need to be strong in this room.

How fees work

  • Insurance we work with

Loam is out of network with insurance plans, so you pay Mariah directly and can ask your plan to pay you back. Loam does not bill Medicare or Medicaid. If you need a counselor who does, tell us and we will help you look.

    • Out of network with insurance plans

    • Medicare and Medicaid are not billed

  • What you pay depends on the session: a first session is 60 minutes, an individual session is 50 minutes, and an extended session is 80 minutes, arranged with Mariah ahead of time. She gives you your fee in writing before the first session, and you pay at the end of the hour. A small number of reduced-fee spots are open at any time: ask for one when you write, and Mariah sets the fee with you. Whatever the fee, the hour and the care are the same.

    • Your fee is given in writing before the first session

    • A limited number of reduced-fee spots

    • HSA and FSA cards work for sessions

    • 24 hours' notice to cancel or move a session

  • Receipts for reimbursement

At the end of each month Loam sends an itemized receipt, called a superbill, that you can send to your plan. It carries a diagnosis code, and your plan will see it. Your plan decides whether it pays you back, and how much.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost before you start, and Loam gives you one in writing. If a bill comes out $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract. You can read more at cms.gov/nosurprises.

  • Checking your benefits

Before your first session, Mariah will go through your plan's out-of-network benefits with you if you ask, and tell you what to ask your plan. Loam cannot promise what a plan will pay.

Your counselor

Meet Mariah Lockett

Mariah is the counselor and owner of Loam, and the only person you will see here.

In the first session Mariah listens, explains how she works and the limits of confidentiality, and lets you set the pace. She works through conversation, with cognitive behavioral skills and narrative work where they help. Her Georgia license is listed at the foot of every page.

Questions

Questions we get first

Do you take my insurance?

Loam is out of network with insurance plans. You pay Mariah directly, and you can ask your plan to pay you back with the monthly receipt we send. Loam does not bill Medicare or Medicaid.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost before you start, and Loam gives you one in writing. If a bill comes out $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract. You can read more at cms.gov/nosurprises.

How do fees work, and when will I know mine?

Your fee depends on the kind of session: a first session, an individual session or a longer one. Mariah gives you yours in writing before your first session, so you know it before you commit to anything. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open at any time; ask for one when you write.

What happens in the first session?

It lasts 60 minutes. Mariah asks what brought you to look for a counselor, explains how she works and the limits of confidentiality, and lets you decide whether it feels like a fit. You do not have to tell your whole story.

What do I do in a crisis?

Call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time. In an emergency, call 911. Loam does not monitor messages around the clock, so please do not use the contact form for anything urgent.

Are you licensed where I live?

Mariah is licensed in Georgia. You can meet in person on Cascade Road, or by video if you are in Georgia when we meet. She cannot see clients who are in other states.
